Rizwan Azam's Biography

Rizwan Azam was born on 2nd February 1985 in Mandi Bahudin. He did his Bachelors in Commerce from Punjab College and Diploma in Sports Science from Australia. Initially, Rizwan was interested in Cricket, however, the champion's interest started to lean towards Badminton as his father motivated him to opt for this game. 

He began training at Community Center in G-7 Islamabad under Coach Imtiaz Gill. The first professional tournament he played was under 16 Provisional Games 2003, where he won a gold medal. The 19 year old became National Junior Champion of Pakistan in 2005 under his supervision. After his victory, he began to train under former National champion, Tahir Ishaq. According to Rizwan Azam, most of his career's victories came his way under his guidance.

 

In 2006, he went for a 2 month training camp in Germany. He showed his mental and physical capabilities right after a tough span of training. He played a thriller semi final against Umer Zeeshan (former National Champion of Pakistan) at All Pakistan Ranking tournament 2006. The year 2006 gave him the confidence that was much needed for the 'Double's specialist' to take over Pakistan's National circuit. He and his partner, Atique Chaudhry, pulled out major upsets in the selection of 2016 South Asian games. They beat the top 3 pairs of Pakistan: Ali Yar/ Noman Sikander, Umer Zeeshan/ Rizwan and Waqas/ Tahir Ishak. Moreover, in the year 2006, he became the Men's doubles National Champion (with Atiq Chaudhry) and the duo remained unbeaten for 4 years. In 2010, he partnered Kashif Sulehri and defended his title for further 3 years. He missed out 2014 National Championship as he was in Australia, but upon coming back in 2015, he bagged National Championship 2015 title (with Kashif Sulehri) once again.

In 2013, he moved to Australia and trained under the former world no. 2 and Commonwealth games Champion, Mr Ong Beng. Not only did he clinch the title of National Champion in his country, but also stood on the podium as best in Australia (2015, 2017 and 2018). In 2015, Rizwan Azam had the status of Men's doubles National Champion in 2 countries: Pakistan and Australia. No one in the history of Badminton in Pakistan has ever been the National Champion of 2 countries at the same time. Moreover, he is the National Games gold medalist. Apart from numerous victories at National championships, he did not hold back to show his capabilities in several Ranking tournaments. 

Not only did Rizwan Azam dominate in Pakistan, but also made his mark around the globe.

  • Gold medalist Men’s Doubles (Syria International series May 2007).

  • Silver medalist Men’s Doubles (Pakistan International Challenge 2007).

  • Silver medalist Men’s Doubles (Syria international series 2008)

  • Silver medalist Men’s Doubles (Nepal International series 2008).

  • Gold medalist Men’s doubles (Maldives International Challenge July 2010).

  • Gold medalist Men’s Doubles (Syria International series Nov 2010).

  • Bronze medalist Men’s Doubles (South Asian Games Bangladesh 2010)

  • Silver medalist Men’s Doubles (New Zealand MITRE 10 Mega Waikato International 2015).

  • Gold medalist Men’s singles and Men’s Doubles (Yonex Sunrise Pakistan International series 2016). No one in the last 2 decades has ever achieved this milestone.

  • Silver medalist Men’s Doubles (Nepal international series 2016)

  • Bronze medalist Men’s Doubles (South Asian Games India 2016

  • Gold medalist in Men’s Doubles (Yonex Sunrise Pakistan International 2017)


In the last 2 decades, no one in badminton has won this many International medals for Pakistan. Moreover Rizwan has attended many overseas training camps in Bulgaria and Malaysia. Lately, Rizwan Azam played the final of Men's doubles at National Championship 2020 with a new partner, Noman Sabir, proving that he is a versatile player and can adjust in varying conditions. 

According to Rizwan Azam, there have been many supporters in his life including Jabir Zamir, Amir Hussain, Kazim Hussain, Kashif majeed, his wife Sara Mohmand and his family. The champion player aims to compete more in Australian Badminton circuit, bringing many more victories and medals, as well as highlighting Pakistan's name around the globe.

Comeback of Nauman Sikander Mir

Nauman Sikander Mir, known as “Nomi” among his friends, was born on 27th july 1977 in Lahore. Nauman belonged to a family who already were national champions (his uncle and his aunt), but little did he know that he'd be known as one of them. He, just like any other child, did not know what badminton was. His uncle, Shakeel Hayat Mir , introduced him to badminton at the age of 11 and trained him under his supervision at LDA Sports Complex Samanabad Lahore in the early days of Nauman.
